PHILADELPHIA PA USA -- Fire fighters battle a fire onboard a United Parcel Service airplane, Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2006, at Philadelphia International Airport in Philadelphia. With smoke in the hold, the crew of a UPS cargo plane declared an emergency and fire and rescue crews met the four-engine jet as it landed early Wednesday at Philadelphia International Airport.
Emergency crews surrounded UPS Flight 1307, a DC-8 bound from Atlanta to Philadelphia, when it touched down shortly after midnight.
The pilot and two crew members jumped to safety as firefighters attacked flames erupting from the rear of the plane.
Firefighters said the blaze was under control by about 4 a.m., though the plane still smoldered.
The airport canceled flight operations during the night, mostly cargo flights, airport spokesman Mark Pesce said.
The charred plane and firefighting equipment still blocked one of the two main runways when the airport reopened at 6 a.m., and Pesce said some flights were likely to be delayed or canceled. He urged people planning to travel on or meet planes to check the status of those flights on the www.phl.org Web site.
The plane was carrying normal customer packages, UPS spokesman Mark Guiffre said. He said the National Transportation Safety Board was investigating the cause of the fire.
The pilot and two crew members were examined for smoke inhalation at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital and released about 4 a.m., Guiffre said.
