About Richmond-Carolina Fire District:
Richmond-Carolina Fire District proudly protects 5000 people living in an area of 30 square miles. We operate out of three stations that protect a primarily rural area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a volunteer status. The Carolina Volunteer Fire Association is the membership arm of the District. That's our patch at the top of the page. The Association preceded the 1986 creation of the District. The Richmond-Carolina Fire District provides fire suppression, rescue, EMS and a dive team to the eastern two-thirds of the town of Richmond, Rhode Island. Richmond is a rural/residential community in Washington County, in the southernmost part of the state. State highways 112 and 138 criss-cross the district. The district is home to the annual, five-day Washington County Fair.
The photo below shows Sides 2 and 3 of a house fire on Route 138 in the district's Usquepaugh section early in 2002. A young resident came home from school and discovered the fire, apparently caused by a heat lamp in a reptile aquarium. Photo by Rich Williams
