About Grandville Fire Department:
Grandville Fire Department proudly protects 16050 people living in an area of 8.5 square miles. We operate out of 1 station that protects a primarily residential area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a combination of paid and volunteer status. The Grandville Fire Department was establish in 1893, when the Village Council purchased 50 buckets, and later appointed Henry Otten as the village's first fire chief. In 1894 the village brigade tested its first fire engine. This hand pumper was not purchased until 1899 from Howe Pump and Engine Company of Indianapolis, Indiana, and stored in the Old Dutch Church. In 1901 the village appointed a fire marshall to care for the engine once a week. The following year the village council selected eight able bodied young men to practice 2 times a month for 2 hours a night with the fire marshall. In 1914, the village purchased and Overland Motor car from Dr. J. D. Brook and converted it into thier first motorized fire engine. In 1929 the Grandville Fire Department changed its focus from strictly suppression to prevention. The department began to hold meetings with interested citizens. These meetings hosted persons from the Grand Rapids Fire Department who gave lectures and showed films. Chief Hildreth also arranged a home inspection program to prevent fire losses and chances of fires. In 1930, the village council contracted with Peter Pirsch & Sons Fire Engine Co for a new peice of apparatus. In 1939 the Grandville Fire department entered the future by receiving training in artificial respiration and completing a Red Cross first aid course. Thus was the beginning of EMS in Grandville. In early 1973, firefighter Bob Dreyer embarked on a project for the city that made other communities envious. He converted his own Chevy Suburban into a well equipped emergency vehicle to provide advanced first-aid at accident scenes or where there were life threatening injuries or illness that demanded complicated emergency first-aid equipment not found in police cruisers or on fire apparatus. This unit was staffed by Bob Dreyer, his sons Al and Dan, Ed Posthumus, and Robert VanderMolen. In 1974 the Grandville Lions Club along with other service organizations purchased a vehicle for this unit to use instead of Bob's suburban. In the first year of operation the E-Unit responded to 272 emergency calls and has since averaged over 800 calls per year. In March 1997, the Grandville City Council unanimously decided to suspend all medical responses by the Grandville Fire Department and E-Unit. This left A.M.R. as the sole medical responder in the City of Grandville due to the fact that the City of Grandville is within thier transport territory. In March 1998, the City of Grandville and the Grandville Fire Dept hired four personnel to staff around the clock a Medical First Responder Unit. This unit went into service in May, 1998, once again providing 24 hour emergency medical assistance to the citizens of Grandville. In June 1998, the Grandville Fire Department placed into service thier first AED which will be carried on the Medical First Responder Unit, allowing the Grandville Fire Department to provide better medical assistance to persons with cardiac problems. In October of 1998, the Grandville Fire Department made thier first save using the new AED (which was only needed once before, since its purchase). By the end of October the Grandville Fire Department will be moving to a new frequency (151.250) with all fireground comms on (155.835 & 154.295)
