About ARCO Kuparuk FD/ North Slope:
ARCO Kuparuk FD/ North Slope proudly protects 1000 + people living in an area of 200 ? square miles. We operate out of 1 station that protects a primarily industrial area. Our department is a private department whose members are on a paid on call status. The Kuparuk river oil field, operated by ARCO Alaska, is the second largest oil field in North America. The field is located adjacent to the Beaufort sea in northern Alaska. The nearest village, which has only 200 residents, is 40 miles to the west. All community services such as housing, medical care, snow removal, power generation and transportation must be provided to support industrial activities including exploration, production, processing and transportation of oil. The development area covers more than 400 square miles of land leased from the State of Alaska. The discovery well was drilled in 1969 and production began in 1981. Kuparuk has three central oil production facilities, a sea water injection plant and 48 active drillsites. Its is estimated that the recoverable reserves are 2 billion barrels (Bbl). Oil is pumped 45 miles from Kuparuk to Pump station 1 of the Trans Alaska Pipeline (TAPS). Kuparuk has 109 miles of road, it encompasses 335 square miles and has 763 acres of well pads. The Kuparuk fire department is a division of the Kuparuk Emergency Services division. The fire departments charge is to protect life, property and the environment within the greater Kuparuk area. There are 4 staff personnel who are responsible for recruitment, training and organization of the volunteer on call emergency responders in all disciplines to safely and efficiently mitigate emergency response incidents. The Kuparuk Emergency Services (KES) chief develops and oversees an annual operations and maintenance budget for all emergency response equipment and apparatus. Additionally the KES chief provides assistance and consultation to field operations, local, state and federal regulatory agencies in the areas of spill prevention/response, fire protection/prevention, life safety and loss control issues. During an emergency event the typical role is as On scene incident commander. Teh GKA Assistant fire chief is an Alaska Clean seas employee. Thier charge is to develop and present the training program for fire department, Rescue, and Fire Officer training. The Assistant chief oversees the day to day operations of the fire department and is initial point of contact for fire dept. business. Fore a fire or rescue situation the normal role for the Assistant Chief is as Fire Ground operations. The Fire Apparatus/Respiratory Technician is an APC employee. Their charge is to maintain, service and insure that all apparatus and tools are operational. Additionally they are required to assist in the maintenance and servicing of field wide respiratory equipment. This position is also involved with the presentation and development of apparatus engineer training. During an emergency operation this position fulfills a normal role one the department as a team member or apparatus engineer.
