After the anniversary memorial service at the site last Wednesday night, Chief Rusty Thomas went home and hung up his uniform for good.


Last June 18, nine Charleston firefighters walked out of their homes for the last time.


Late in the evening of June 18, 2007, Firehouse.Com began receiving reports of a tragedy in the city of Charleston, S.C.

The embattled chief -- who resigned last month on the eve of the release of a controversial report -- broke his silence Tuesday to speak about the fallen heroes.

The Phase II Report blamed the Charleston Fire Department in the deaths of nine firefighters last year at the site of the Sofa Super Store on June 18.
