For the first time in the last eight years, Campus Firewatch has not recorded a single campus-related fire death in the fall semester at colleges and universities in the U.S.

The Massachusetts-based organization that monitors campus-related fire deaths has been tracking such trends since 2000. Since that time, 129 people have died in campus-related fires and 40 percent of the fatalities have occurred in the fall semester.

"The cause for this is unclear," founder Ed Comeau said, "however, it is certainly what everyone has been hoping for.

"More schools across the nation are taking action to educate students about fire safety and there is a greater awareness among parents about the importance of fire safety practices at schools including the use of automatic fire sprinklers, fire alarms, smoke alarms and fire safety education."
