DETROIT --

Despite the efforts of Detroit firefighters Tuesday, a woman died after a house fire on the city's east side.

When firefighters arrived at the house on Outer Drive near Newport Street, a man was outside of the burning house but said his wife was trapped inside.

Firefighters managed to retrieve the woman from the house but she later died at St. John Hospital.

The woman and her husband have not been identified.

The husband did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
