Dog Alerts Maryland Family to House Fire

POTOMAC, Md. --

A family's dog is credited with helping residents escape a two-alarm fire early Monday morning in Potomac.

The fire broke out at about 1:30 a.m. at a home in the 11600 block of Lake Potomac Drive.

The family dog, named Jet, alerted the family to the fire, News4's Pat Collins reported.

The family was able to get out of the house safely and there were no injuries.

Damages are estimated at about $1.2 million. It took about 75 firefighters to put out the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but officials do not believe it was intentionally set.

"There is nothing suspicious about it," said Pete Piringer of Montgomery County Fire. "They believe it's accidental. They believe it probably had something to do with a car (near the garage)."

This was the second major fire on Lake Potomac Drive this year, Collins reported.
