NEW YORK --

A teenage boy who was rescued from an early-morning fire in Brooklyn on Tuesday died in the hospital because of burns, reports The New York Times.

Misael Fuentes was pronounced dead Wednesday afternoon at Staten Island University Hospital. Family members said he was burned over 85 percent of his body from the fire, which broke out at about 2 a.m. Tuesday at the corner of Newkirk and Ocean Avenues in Flatbush, reported the Times.

Pablo Fuentes, 55, who was the superintendent of the building and shared the apartment with his wife, grandchildren and children, tossed two of his grandchildren out the window into the arms of neighbors before the firefighters arrived, reported the Times.

Eight members of Misael's family were hospitalized and six, including him, had to stay overnight, reported the Times.

The New York Times reported that authorities believe the fire started in a closet, but the cause is under investigation.
