DETROIT --

Fire investigators said a house fire that claimed the life of a 74-year-old man on Detroit's Westside Wednesday night was caused by careless smoking.

Once firefighters were able to get into the home on the 5000 block of Whitefield, they found the man's body in the back bedroom of the home.

The man was the only person in the home when the fire broke out, said authorities.

The man has not yet been identified.
