BETHESDA, Md. --

Montgomery County firefighters rescued an elderly couple trapped in a kitchen fire early Saturday.

The flames broke out in the 9400 block of Rockville Pike in Bethesda around 1:15 a.m.

The two were treated for smoke inhalation at a nearby hospital and were listed in stable condition, fire officials said.

Investigators said the fire started in the refrigerator and quickly spread through the house.

Fire officials said the fire caused $60,000 in damage.
