DETROIT --

A 5-year-old boy was killed Sunday morning in a house fire on Detroit's east side in the area of St. Clair Street and Mack Avenue. Police said the fire started at around 3:30 a.m. in a two-family duplex.

The affected family lived in the upper level of the home. The fire started in the lower half, which appears to be vacant, police said.

Firefighters pulled the boy from the house, but he later died.

One firefighter was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation.

Arson crews on Sunday continued to investigate the cause of the blaze.
