DES MOINES, Iowa --

A Gilman firefighter is recovering after suffering a heart attack while putting out a blaze.

Eight Gilman firefighters were called at about 10:07 a.m. Sunday to a kitchen fire at 1707 Seventh Ave.

Mont Smith, a 20-year veteran of the Gilman Fire Department, suffered a heart attack at the scene, according to a news release. He was taken to Grinnell Regional Medical Center and then flown to Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

He is in good condition.

No one else was injured in the fire, which caused $90,000 in damage.
